Energy-efficient heat-pump air conditioning systems

Heat pumps

Understandably, most people associate the term 'air conditioning' solely with cooling. This is a common misconception, as virtually all of today's air conditioning systems are heat pumps which can heat as well as cool to provide total year-round comfort.

This heating facility is not achieved through the use of conventional, power-hungry electric heating elements, but instead through the use of highly energy-efficient 'reverse cycle' (heat pump) technology

A technical explanation of how heat pumps work can be found here, however in simple terms they provide effective and controllable heating, whilst consuming up to 80% less power than any other form of electrical heating.

For example:

An electric fire, convector heater or underfloor heating system having a rated heating output of 3kW, consumes a directly proportional 3kW of electrical power. Some of the latest, energy-efficient heat pump systems can produce more than 5kW of heat from 1kW of electrical power, in turn providing an electrical saving of more than 80%.

In an attempt to promote the use of such energy-efficient products, the government have awarded a reduced rate of VAT to heat pumps being installed into residential properties, and an Enhanced Capital Allowance tax incentive to businesses choosing to install heat pumps into their premises.

Indeed, our own offices are heated solely through the use of heat pump air conditioning systems, all of which boasts an 'AA' energy-efficiency rating. This has not only proved effective in reducing our operating costs, but also our carbon footprint.

Heat pump air conditioning systems are available in a wide range of styles ranging from LG's stylish wall-mounted Artcool range, through to discrete ducted systems that can be totally concealed.

The new Daikin Altherma system harnesses the incredible efficiency of heat pump technology to provide low-cost hot water. For more details see our Daikin Altherma page.
